Canada Introduces Tech Talent Strategy to Attract H-1B Visa Holders
Published on: June 27, 2023
Canada's Immigration Minister, Sean Fraser, has announced measures to attract more global tech talent to Canada, with a particular focus on H-1B visa holders from the United States. These measures are part of Canada's first-ever Tech Talent Strategy. The key initiatives targeting H-1B visa holders are as follows:
New 3-year open work permit: Starting from July 16, 2023, H-1B visa holders in the US, along with their accompanying immediate family members, will be eligible to apply for a streamlined work permit to come to Canada. If approved, they will receive an open work permit that allows them to work for almost any employer in Canada. This initiative aims to improve labor mobility in North America and expand opportunities for skilled workers in high-tech fields.
Expanding opportunities for skilled workers: The introduction of the new work permit for H-1B visa holders is expected to attract highly skilled tech professionals to Canada and contribute to the country's economic growth. The initiative will remain in effect for one year or until Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) receives 10,000 applications.
By providing H-1B visa holders with a pathway to work in Canada, the Tech Talent Strategy aims to address labor market shortages, promote innovation, and strengthen the tech industry in both countries. These measures demonstrate Canada's commitment to attracting global talent and positioning itself as a favorable destination for skilled tech professionals.
