In the past year, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has focused on tackling fraud and safeguarding students from financial vulnerability. As part of the 2025–2027 Immigration Levels Plan, the government has decided to reduce Canada’s temporary resident population over the coming years. This adjustment aims to align with Canada's long-term economic goals and to reinforce the integrity of its temporary resident programs.
A significant change announced today by the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, is the increase in the number of hours international students are allowed to work off-campus during their studies. Effective immediately, eligible students can now work up to 24 hours per week while classes are in session, providing more flexibility and financial independence.
Additionally, a new rule requires international students to apply for and receive approval for a new study permit before transferring to a different learning institution. This measure ensures that students are better protected and prevents any misuse of the program.
These changes aim to enhance oversight and further protect international students, ensuring they have a safe and rewarding academic experience in Canada.
