Canada offers asylum to refugees from within or out of Canada. If you are outside Canada, then, you have to be referred by the UNHCR or a private sponsorship group.
You can also seek refugee status while in Canada, if you fear for your safety once you leave the country. The Canadian Refugee System has two main parts:
- Refugee and Humanitarian Resettlement Program, which targets those from outside Canada who need protection.
- In-Canada Asylum Program, which is for persons within Canada who are making refugee protection claims.
