The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is a critical step for international students transitioning from Canadian educational institutions to the workforce. It's tailored for students who have completed a program at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) and offers a unique pathway towards gaining work experience and eventually applying for permanent residency (PR).

Who Can Extend Their PGWP?
PGWP Holders with Expiring Passports: Those who couldn't get the full-length PGWP initially due to a soon-to-expire passport can apply for an extension. This requires a letter of explanation during the application process.
Temporary PGWP Extension Policy (Effective April 6, 2023): A special policy allows for an 18-month extension for PGWPs expiring in 2023 or those that expired between September 20, 2021, and December 31, 2022. Eligible individuals, including those outside Canada, can apply for this open work permit. Note that the extension is capped at 18 months or until the passport's expiration, whichever is earlier.
For detailed information on this temporary policy, including eligibility and application procedures, refer to the dedicated IRCC webpage.
What If You Can't Extend Your PGWP?
For those ineligible for a PGWP extension, other avenues exist to prolong your stay in Canada:
Visitor Visa: This allows you to stay in Canada for six months as a visitor, available in single-entry or multi-entry formats.
Visitor Record: Apply for this to extend your visitor status in Canada, ensuring you submit the application at least 30 days before your current status expires.
Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP): If you've applied for PR, a BOWP lets you stay in Canada while awaiting the decision.
Other Work Permit Options: Various other work permits are available, subject to eligibility criteria.
Understanding your options post-PGWP is crucial for a seamless transition in Canada. Whether extending your PGWP or exploring other permits, staying informed is key to your success as an international graduate in Canada.
